The Old Castlemaine Gaol first opened in 1861 and was active prison up until it closed in 1990. Many prisoners have been held in these cells from the Goldfields and surrounding regions for a variety of crimes. The prison was based on a Pentonville style which was designed to segregate the prisoners. Between 1865 and 1876, there were even 10 criminals hung at the Gaol.
